People Affected

Trisomy 13 can affect anyone, but the chance of a child being born with this syndrome increases, as the mother gets older.

It is estimated that Trisomy 13 affects approximately 1 in 10,000 live births

Prognosis

Babies with this disease do not live very long, in fact:

  • Approximately 45% of infants with trisomy 13 die within their first month of life

  • More than 70% die by the age of one

  • The 30% that do survive past one year of age have a very slim chance of living past adolescence

Life Span

It is expected that an infant with trisomy 13 will pass away before the age of one. However, there are a few cases of people making it into their teen years.
